i live on a large farm with horses. there are also many other animals dags cats ect. and the ticks are horrible. i had chickens a few summers ago (i dont know what breed) and they did a nuber on the ticks but now they’re back and worse than ever. i was just wondering if there are any breeds of chickens that really like to eat insects or ticks.
I asked a question earlier about a tick biting into my dog and causing some irritation. I have since read a few other similar questions wherein the responders state that a dog that has been ‘treated’ will not get bitten.
The proper response should be "the dog shouldn’t get bitten". Tick treatments are not a 100% effective repellent. Ticks will still get on the animal and they will still bite on occasion. The tick treatment will then kill them. My dog got a particularely resistant tick and it did manage to bury itself into the flesh before it died. He was treated 2 1/2 weeks ago.
So; for all in the dog and cat owner community here is a heads up. You should still be checking your animals for ticks.
Dr. Kevin R. Kazacos, DVM, Ph.D., an expert in parasites at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, warns that fleas, ticks and other external parasites are best prevented. Once you let fleas into your home, youll need the help of an exterminator to get rid of them, and ticks a common disease vectors. Preventative treatments for external parasites are widely available and very effective, but you should see your local veterinarian for the best treatments for your pets.
